Our Drain-Clearing Inspection & Service Process

We first determine where the clog is and what may be causing it. Video inspection technology may provide a closer view of the affected line.

Our confirmed service process includes:

Clog Inspection: We evaluate the affected drain and relevant plumbing conditions.
Method Selection: We consider the pipe’s age and material, along with whether the system serves a residential or commercial property, before selecting drain snaking or hydro jetting.
Pricing Communication: We provide honest, upfront repair pricing before the proposed work proceeds.

There are no overtime charges for service outside standard business hours.

Clogged Drain Signs, Causes & Preventive Maintenance

Blockages can develop from materials entering a fixture or from conditions farther along the line. The likely cause often depends on which drains are affected, how quickly the problem returns, and the age of the plumbing system.

Common sources of clogged drains include:

Hair and soap
Everyday dust and dirt
Food waste
Toilet paper and small objects
Tree roots
Mineral buildup

Repeated clogs in the same fixture need professional diagnosis, as do several drains that begin emptying slowly at once. Wastewater backing up through a lower drain can indicate a blockage beyond an individual sink, tub, or toilet. A problem that returns after temporary clearing calls for an evaluation of the affected line rather than repeated do-it-yourself treatment.

Chemical drain cleaners can damage plumbing components, and they don’t remove every underlying buildup or obstruction. They may temporarily change how a drain flows without revealing why the blockage keeps returning.

Preventive Drain Maintenance

For most homeowners, we recommend professional drain cleaning every one to two years. Older homes and properties with recurring drain issues may need more frequent service based on system condition. We also offer a home protection maintenance plan for customers seeking an ongoing approach to plumbing maintenance.

Drain Cleaning Methods for Different Pipe Conditions

Standard drain snaking uses an auger, a flexible tool designed to break through or retrieve an obstruction. This method may be suitable when a localized object or compact blockage is restricting flow. The pipe’s condition and material still matter when choosing equipment.

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water and nozzles to remove grease, sludge, scale, and other buildup from pipe walls. Before selecting this method, we consider factors such as pipe age and material. Video inspection may also be used when diagnosis requires a closer view of the line.

Berkeley Private Sewer Lateral Requirements

Some older Berkeley properties have clay sewer laterals beneath mature street trees. Roots can enter at pipe joints and contribute to recurring blockages or sewer backups. A camera inspection can help identify line conditions, but municipal compliance involves separate requirements.

Berkeley’s Private Sewer Lateral ordinance generally requires a Sewer Lateral Certificate of Compliance when a property is sold or before a building permit is issued for a remodel valued above $60,000. This is municipal information and doesn’t indicate that we provide certification, testing, replacement, permit coordination, or compliance administration.

Berkeley no longer accepts closed-circuit television camera submissions as standalone proof of Private Sewer Lateral compliance. A Sewer Lateral Certificate is generally valid for 20 years after complete lateral replacement or seven years after verification testing without complete replacement.

Property owners should confirm current requirements directly with Berkeley before a sale, qualifying remodel, or other compliance event. Drain clearing addresses flow and obstruction concerns, while a municipal certificate follows the city’s applicable verification process.
